That Scale Just Has to be Wrong!

That Scale Just Has to be Wrong!

I don't know about you, but I have a love affair with pastries! There is something about a freshly made danish with cream cheese, or a buttery, flaky puff pastry filled with a hot fruit filling. Chocolate croissants, buttery croissants...actually, I love croissants any way you can serve them!

A fresh pastry and a great cup of coffee is something I will never turn down!

But before we go any further, I should tell you a little about me. Some personal facts that may help you understand better why I am taking this journey. First of all, even though the title to this blog says something about a scale, I have never been controlled by one. I do keep one in the house, and I weigh myself every month. Another fact is that I am 5'7'' and I'm not going to tell you how much I weigh. Simply for the reason that I think when a person hears a number they immediately visualize a body size that may or may not be a true representation of that person. I will share my clothing size and that is a 14. I was blessed with broad shoulders and a large frame. I have also been blessed with knees that won't allow for anything strenuous. Walking is my friend.  Even when I was in my early 20's and weighed less than 130lbs, I still wore a size 9.

Now that you know a little more about me, I'll move on....

One morning while I was drinking my coffee, I realized that what I had been searching for was a balance between food...really good food and my life. I want the freedom to savor each day as well as each meal and I have found the way to do just that!

I mentioned the series of books by Mireille Guiliano in my previous post. Her first book holds 12 chapters. In the first chapter she informs her readers that she gained weight after moving to America and going to university. Can anyone else relate to that? Maybe not the moving to America, but there is truth to the Freshman 20  and I was not immune to it's clutches as a freshman at OCC.

On returning home to France, a family friend and doctor gives her some great advice. Keep a food diary. I do think a lot of "diet" programs encourage this too, but this advice is the only similarity I found.  She embarks on a 3 week food diary with the addition of when and where she ate. I have come to realize just how important this part is...to not only our physical well being but also to our mental happiness. Much, much more on this subject coming soon!

Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.
- Mark Twain

Therefore, today I am starting my food journal. I expect this to be a very enlightening discovery but I am looking forward to it regardless. A large part of the journal will be not just where I am when I eat, but more specifically about WHERE I am. Was I standing in the kitchen? Am I sitting at the table? Maybe I am in the car. Am I dining a lone or with another person? All of these details will play a big part in the next step of this journey.

How about you? Did a big change in your life like going away to college or an emotional event cause you to change your eating habits?

If you want to join me and keep your own food journal, or if you have already done so and would like to share, please leave me a comment. I firmly believe in having a connection with others, especially during this time of social distancing, is very important and I would truly love to hear from you!
