Getting Ready for a Party When You Have Nothing to Wear!

Getting Ready for a Party When You Have Nothing to Wear!

How many times have I heard this one?  I know we all get tired of the same outfits, the same old jacket...but this time it was different. This time it was because I didn't feel comfortable in anything I tried on when I looked in the mirror. Oh what it would be like to just step into any item of clothing and feel confident.

Yesterday was the first company party given by my part-time employer in over a year. A theme was chosen and it was Tail-Gate Party. It is football season and we were encouraged to wear out favorite sports team jersey. I am a HUGE football fan, but somehow I don't own any sports jerseys. I took myself down to the local store and looked for a collegiate t-shirt. I had two choices. One was short sleeve and one was long sleeve. Guess which one I chose? The long sleeve of course. My answer to when I don't feel confident is to cover everything.

So how did I get here? I would love to put the blame on something else, someone else, anything else...but I take full responsibility. Previously I spoke about walking again, and how circumstances of the last year changed a lot of my routine. I am still walking several times a week, but I also got comfortable in thinking that I didn't need to curb my portion sizes. WRONG! What is that old saying, 'Eat less, move more'. Very basic, I know, but it proves it self over and over. While I do understand that varying health issues may factor into your personal journey, for me I am the average woman of 54 years.

Portion control. These words are repeated over and over again in her book, French Women Don't Get Fat. They have been repeated over and over for many years. My grandmothers doctor told her...my mom's doctor told her and my doctor has repeated the same thing to me. Eat less, move more. I even asked my doctor about a "diet" pill that had been prescribed to my friend, Phentermine. He shook his head and said that he didn't like prescribing appetite suppressors because they work for a short period of time and then your body stops reacting to them and you gain all the weight back, and more. I wanted to beg him to prescribe it for me, because I wanted a quick start to weight loss, but in my gut I knew he was right.

EAT LESS, MOVE MORE. Okay, so we know what we have to do. So what are portions anyway? If you know, you are one step a head of me. I thought I knew, but I needed a little reminding.

1 c veggies, fruit or pasta size of baseball
1/2 c mashed potatoes, rice or ice cream size of a light bulb
1 oz dried fruit size of a golf ball
3 oz chicken, beef or fish for protein size of your fist
1 cookie two poker chips

Are you surprised? I am making a commitment to adhere to these portion sizes for the next month. Along with my extra walking schedule, I am confident I am going to see a difference in my waist line.

"There was nothing wrong, he explained, with eating pastries, but my consumption had gone out of balance."                                                 ~~~Mireille Guiliano, French Women Don't Get Fat

I will get back to you in one month. If you want to join me, comment your goals and we can do this together. If you have had success with this slow and steady way of changing your body and getting more energy, I would love to hear from you as well!

Remember to keep moving, keep your portions under control, and make an effort to enjoy what you are eating. Turn the tv off and savor each bite. If you do this, if we do this, I think we'll all see a difference in our mindset too!

Have a great week! I'll be off visiting my grandchildren soon, but I hope to hear about your personal journeys!

Love,

GiGi
